These high school writing prompts (or eighth grade essay topics) are written for students in high school. They are free to use under a Creative Commons License.

  1. If you could choose a superpower for a week, what would it be and what would you do with it?
  2. Imagine that you are a scientist and you invent a cure for a disease. What disease would you choose and why? What would you do with the cure?
  3. In Ghana, people select special shaped coffins to be buried in that represent what they loved in life. For example, a hairdresser might select a coffin shaped like a hairdryer, a pilot an airplane, an athlete a tennis shoe. What special shaped coffin would you select for yourself and why?
  4. If you could go back in time and witness one historical event, what would it be and why?
  5. If you could live forever, but had to remain the same age, what age would you choose and why?
  6. Some foods go great together, like peanut butter and jelly and milk and cookies. What new combination would you suggest people around the world try and fall in love with and why?
  7. Write an argument that either supports or opposes the following statement: Cell phone use should be unrestricted during school hours.
  8. If you could choose to either lie without being detected or detect when others were lying, what would you choose and why?
  9. If you could select any animal to be your highly trained and constant companion, which animal would you choose and why?
  10. Imagine that one national law is revoked. Which would it be and how would it change our country?
  11. One of the 7 continents is scheduled to sink into the ocean. Which continent do you believe the world could best do without and why.
  12. Write a proposal for a sport that is not currently a part of the Olympic Games to be a part of the next competition.
  13. Imagine that you have to live for a week inside a video game. What video game would it be and how would you survive?
  14. If you had the opportunity to remove past government leaders from office and take their place, who would it be and what would you do differently?
  15. Two fairy-tale villains are trapped in an elevator and get into an altercation. You are a police officer who needs to write a police report detailing the incident. Who was involved and what happened?
  16. The whole world has agreed to adopt one universal language. You are in charge of making the selection. What language do you select and why?
  17. If you could only choose one fruit to eat with every meal for the rest of your life, which fruit would it be and why?
  18. If you could only choose one vegetable to eat with every meal for the rest of your life, which vegetable would it be and why?
  19. If you had to choose to get one person’s face tattooed on your arm, who would it be and why?
  20. You get to play matchmaker with any two people from history. Who would you pair together? Write the dialogue for a "lover's quarrel" between the pair.
  21. Write an argument that either supports or opposes the following statement: Advertisers truthfully describe products to potential consumers.
  22. Imagine that you are attending your 10-year high school reunion. Select one of your teachers that you see at the party and write a dialogue detailing your reunion.

  29. Against all odds, you won an Academy Award for best actor/actress. Write your acceptance speech.
  30. You have been entrusted with the power to gift $1,000,000 to a deserving citizen. You are not allowed to keep the money or bestow it upon a relative. Who do you gift it to and why?
  31. You have the opportunity to attend your own funeral. Write your elegy.
  32. You are a scientist that has discovered the secret to everlasting life. You just need to test your formula on somebody. Select your guinea pig, and then write a lab report detailing the experiment.
  33. You vacation to the Caribbean and meet a witchdoctor who can cast a spell to give you $10,000 in exchange for one year of your life. You can choose to trade as many years as you like but must at least select one. Write a detailed description comparing how you spent your money and the life opportunities that you missed.
  34. You are an archeologist that digs up the bones of an undiscovered ancient species. Write a detailed lab report detailing your discovery.
  35. You are given the power to stop one war in history from occurring. Describe in detail what war you stop and how it would change history.
  36. The leaders of the world have decided to redistribute wealth evenly across every nation. Write a newspaper report about people's reactions to this news.
  37. You are to head up a team of researchers to live on the bottom of the ocean for a year in a submarine. You can select any 3 living people to help you carry out this task. Who do you select and why?
  38. Write an argument that either supports or opposes the following statement: Arranged marriages never turn out well.
  39. Write an argument that either supports or opposes the following statement: Morality is conditional.
  40. You can choose where and when you will be reincarnated. Write a detailed description of your first year of your new life.
  41. The leaders of the world have agreed to eliminate borders and allow people to flow freely from one country to another. Imagine that you are a reporter covering the migration of a North Korean to another country. Write a detailed report about their experience.
  42. You have been given an elixir that will make you excel in any subject with ease. What subject do you select and why?
  43. You and your co-host have created a vlog that is the latest internet sensation. Write a script for your most viewed show.
  44. Think about a decision that was made for you when you were younger, a decision that you did not have any input on. If you could choose to go back and reverse that decision, would you? Write a detailed explanation about your choice.
  45. Imagine that you could combine any two animals into a hybrid creature then write an encyclopedia article describing this new creature in detail.
  46. Some of the best characters in literary history are so complex it's hard to believe that they are not real. Reverse the situation and imagine that you are a fictional character instead of a real person. Write the first chapter of your journey as a protagonist.
  47. Write an argument that either supports or opposes the following statement: Parents should be able to select genetic characteristics of their future children.
  48. Imagine that two of your favorite fairy tale heroes have just been involved in a minor car accident. Write up a police report that details the sequence of events, don't forget to tell which character was at fault.
  49. Think of something that you believed in when you were younger that you later discovered was make believe. This could be Santa Claus, The Tooth-Fairy, The Easter Bunny etc. Imagine that you stumbled across them and discovered that they were real after all. Write a dialogue between you and this make believe character.
  50. Write an argument that either supports or opposes the following statement: A person's material wealth has absolutely nothing to do with their character.
