  1. Write about a character that dislikes your favorite activity.
  2. If you could become an animal, what animal would you choose and why?
  3. Pick a color. Write about a world where everything of that color has disappeared.
  4. Write about a character who is good at things you are not good at.
  5. Write about a character who is good at the same things you are, but does them differently. For example, they paint in a completely different style or play a different position in the same sport.
  6. Write about someone who is suddenly able to see for the first time.
  7. Write a piece where the descriptions focus on the sense of smell.
  8. Write a piece involving a made-up language.
  9. Write about a world or country where they use an everyday object like a book or a clothespin as money.
  10. Write about a character who has a secret hobby. Why do they have to keep it secret?
  11. Think of a random adjective and noun. That is now the name of a vehicle (be it car, boat, or spaceship). How did it get that name? What sort of person owns it?
  12. Take a random object nearby and make up a sport that utilizes it. What are the rules? What qualities does someone need to have to be good at it (speed, strength, etc.)?
  13. Pick an item of clothing that you own or that someone nearby is wearing. Write about a character that would wear it constantly.
  14. Write about a character without making it clear whether the character is male or female.
  15. Write about a world where the weather is always opposite the weather you are currently experiencing.
  16. Write about a character that breaks any electronic they touch.
  17. Write about a thief that only steals one obscure item, like snow globes or used up pens.
  18. Write a dialogue that has two characters who normally don't get along agreeing on something.
  19. Write two characters from very different climates talking about the weather in a third place.
  20. What would constitute an exciting day in the life of a pen?
  21. Write about an artist who is colorblind.
  22. Write about a character from a modern setting suddenly finding themselves in a fantasy or futuristic setting.
  23. Write about a world in which one major historical event turned out differently.
  24. Free write on the theme of sunlight.
  25. Write about a character that has a different skin color from you.
  26. Combine two animals. What would the resulting creature look and act like?
  27. Listen to a piece of instrumental music and write about what it makes you think or feel.
  28. Write about a character who has visions of the future that always have one incorrect detail.
  29. What if everyone was colorblind? How would it affect the way we describe things?
  30. Write about a character who has the ability to make everyone look at him or her.
  31. Write about a character who doesn't know anything about their own species.
  32. Write about a character who always does the right thing by accident.
  33. Write about a character based on a flower.
  34. What if the earth suddenly turned out to be flat after all?
  35. Write about a character who can control dreams.

  37. Think of something you would like to celebrate and create a new holiday. How would people celebrate it? When would it be?
  38. What if an animal most people find scary or gross was really trying to make friends with everyone?
  39. What if everyone woke up one morning and could fly?

  41. Write about an everyday conversation or event, but use tone to make it seem scary.
  42. Pick a genre that you don't normally write. Read a few examples from it and try to imitate the style that is used.
  43. Write about a character that has an unusual verbal tic.
  44. Write about a city that prides itself on its geese.
  45. Mix the events and style of two different genres. For example, use the tone of a romance, but write about action/adventure events.

  47. What if foods suddenly switched flavors?
  48. Write about a character who mainly or only interacts with others through the internet.
  49. Write about a character that is an animal in a human's body.
  50. Write about a world where they can't see any stars.

  52. Write a piece where all the action takes place through dialogue.
  53. Write about what happens when we sleep.
  54. Write about aliens discovering a common practice and finding it bizarre or offensive.
  55. Free write on the theme of feathers.
  56. What if an animal people normally see as cute or friendly actually didn't like anyone?
  57. What if everyone had clothes that changed color depending on mood, so no one could hide their feelings?
  58. Write about a character who is in the opposite physical condition of you.
  59. Take a string of random events or details that you've noticed over the past few days and connect them into a sinister plot.
  60. There is a condition called prosopagnosia in which a person cannot recognize faces. What would happen if a very large group of people had this condition? If the whole world did?
  61. Write about a character with a very different family life than your own.
  62. Write about a villain who wants to reform.
  63. Think of as many ways as possible to make a character seem suspicious without the character actually doing anything wrong.
  64. What do fantasy creatures think of each other? Do dragons think unicorns are boring? Do griffins find pegasi stuck up?
  65. Free write on the theme of being trapped in a storm.
  66. Write about a character whose favorite animal is one most people find gross.
  67. What if ghosts were real but mostly acted like they did when they were alive?
  68. Write a passage twice, once using very little description and once using as much as possible.
  69. Many stories deal with one person or a small group of people suddenly arriving in a world different from their own. What would happen if a whole school or company ended up in such a place?
  70. Write about a system of magic. What sorts of spells are there? How do they work? Do you need ingredients?
  71. Make a loop out of a piece of string and drop in on the ground. The outline is now a continent or country. What would it be like? Would certain areas of coast have better harbors than others and be better for shipping? Is one border a river or a mountain range?
  72. Write about a character that dresses very differently from you.
  73. Free write on the theme of surprise.
  74. Write about a culture or race that has completely different ideas of beauty.
  75. Write about friends or romantic interests from species so different that they need special machines or spells to be in the same place.
  76. What if clowns were actually the remnants of a lost civilization?
  77. Write about a system of magic that would allow someone with your current education to be a powerful wizard.
  78. Come up with as many ways as possible for a powerful character to be captured or subdued.
  79. Write about a dangerous situation involving suspenders.
  80. Write about a character who casts spells but is mute.
  81. Write about a character who will never wear stripes. Why?
  82. Free write on the theme of forests.
  83. Write two different descriptions of a character- one how they see themselves, and another how others see them.
  84. What if everyone had a superpower?
  85. What if animals reacted to songs in real life the same way they do in princess movies?
  86. Write about a character who discovers a new type of plant.
  87. Write about a character who can read minds only when they have a headache.
  88. Free write on the theme of arrogance.
  89. What if everyone- men and women- were required to wear high heels?
  90. Write about a world where no one knows what gender a person is without asking. Is it a different species, or do humans have to cover themselves so entirely here that no one can tell?
  91. Write two versions of a scene- one with a sad tone and one with a happy tone.
  92. What if blimps were a common form of transportation?
  93. Write about a character who cannot lie or even hide the truth.
  94. Free write on the theme of peace.
  95. What if scientists were able to transfer memories from one person to another?
  96. Write about a country that is small but is able to keep itself from being attacked.
  97. Write about a character who has power but doesn't want it.
  98. What if video game characters kept going after you stopped playing?
  99. Write about an island so small that only four people can live on it.
